Final Countdown

I'm kind of excited and nervous all at the same time because I just got my first job. While I wasn't too terribly interested in getting a job at first, I'm kind of excited that my mom made me go to the interview. It'll be really nice once I have a steady cash flow coming in and be able to do more things because of it. Luckily I start next week when we're out of school so I'll hopefully be able to get the hang of things. We'll just have to see how things go.

Slice of Life # 48 / 22

I've recently purchased a book and I'm super excited about it. It's Q & A: A Novel by Vikas Swarup. It was the basis of Slumdog Millionaire which is a fantastic movie. Assuming that the book is similar to the movie, it follows the life of a young man who goes on to play Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal, however, he was illiterate and had never been to school and was able to win. This shocked many people and the police got involved because they assumed that he had been cheating the entire time. That was the case though, because of his life experiences he had been able to correctly answer each question.
I first saw the movie at my grandparents house a few years ago and always wondered if it were a book first. It wasn't until now that I actually searched and saw that it was. Needless to say that I bought it as soon as I found it and I'm eagerly awaiting its arrival.

Slice of Life # 47 / 21

Ugly Abercrombie CEO
About a week or so ago I saw on Tumblr something about the Abercrombie and Fitch CEO saying that he doesn't like the thought of larger people wearing his merchandise and that's why they only carry extremely small sizes. I also read that they only hire attractive looking people because attractive people working brings attractive looking shoppers. I almost flipped my lid, especially when I saw a picture of this guy. My friend, Bailey, said, "He looks like Gary Busey bobbing for apples in a tub of bees." I couldn't agree more. Also, he won't have the stores donate clothes that are outdated because he doesn't want people who couldn't afford his clothes to be wearing them. "In 2006, he told Salon magazine, 'A lot of people don't belong (in our clothes), and they can't belong. Are we exclusionary? Absolutely. Those companies that are in trouble are trying to target everybody: young, old, fat, skinny. But then you become totally vanilla.' " (NBC) Ugh, it just thoroughly upsets me that has happened. And all the while, I'm just sitting here thinking, "just because you're skinny doesn't mean you're even pretty." Some people are just very scum like, him being included.

Slice of Life # 20

I think that sometimes people get a bit touchy about insignificant things. I read another article about a kid getting sent home for a shirt. This time a fifth grader from Montreal, Canada who wore a Senators jersey. Keila went to a private school and on the day of a big game between the Canadiens and the Senators the school decided that they wouldn't have to wear their uniforms if they wore a Canadiens jersey and she had grown up being a Senators fan so instead of wearing the Canadiens shirt she wore the opposing teams shirt. She got sent to the principals office and when she refused to change she got sent home. I thought that this was one of the most ridiculous things I'd ever heard. I can't believe that kids actually get sent home for having an opinion that differs from a vast majoirty of those around them. I think that so long as they're not hurting anyone then they should be fine and feel free to voice what they feel.

Slice of Life # 45 / 19

I always love hearing stories about people when they were younger. A friend of mine told me that when he was younger he thought that Chicago was a state and that goats and sheep were the same animal and by younger I mean last year and a couple hours ago. It was pretty hard having to explain the differences between sheep and goats for the plain and simple fact that he's almost 17. I wish that I had neat dumb stories like those, but alas, I do not.

Slice of Life # 44 / 18

I recently saw an article on Yahoo about a fourteen year old boy who got arrested while at school over a t-shirt. According to the article, Jared was wearing a shirt this shirt and when he was told by a teacher to take it off and put it back on inside out, he refused. His lawyer said that he was fine from the beginning of the school day until lunch when a teacher said something to him. Jared is a firm believer in the second amendment and thoroughly believes that the government is trying to take away that right. And while the school dress code says they can't wear anything that promotes drugs, alcohol or violence, it says nothing about the NRA which is what the shirt advertised. Not only was he arrested, he was also suspended. When he came back from his suspension he was once again wearing the shirt that sparked this entire event. While I don't know much more than the basics when it comes to the NRA, I applaud Jared for standing up for what he believes in even though he's gotten into so much trouble over it.

Slice of Life # 43

As summer draws nearer, I can feel my brain already shutting down. It seems like in all of my classes I'm slacking and not trying nearly as hard as I was first semester. I feel bad, don't get me wrong, but after Spring Break I am Bed, Bath, and Beyond done with school work. I was this way last year too and even though I promised myself I'd be better this year it's truly difficult. I really wish that we could've pushed Spring Break off a few more weeks because of this. I'm not quite sure what it is about it but it ruins coming back to school for a lot of people I know. And here I sit, promising myself once again that I'll try to do better next year.
